It's been quite a week and i have a lot of people to thank!
This is Part 1 - if you are not mentioned here you will be in Part 2!
Firstly to Dpulse Recordings for making aMBieNT ReFLeCTioNS oF JaNa KYoMooN available.
This is a collection of the 'best of' recordings of the last couple of years of performing music in the virtual world of Second Life and simulcast on Radio JaNa.
I purposefully made the album an hour long which is perfect time for most massage sessions, meditation, quiet time - anything that helps you relax!
The GooDBYe WeeKeND show started a few years ago at the sim owned by Magnolia Anthony. It developed into a favourite hour of the week and moved from 7PM to 2PM when my computer relocated to UK time.
I have met such inspiring people at these shows - inspiration is a two way thing. You as the audience inspire me - sadly some of the audience are no longer with us.
One of my expressions is 'I may not know you in person but i know you in spirit' so Nos da Brywnwynn, Doctor Ann and Delinda! We were enriched by your presence. Diolch yn fawr
And today I am inspired by the particles of InterfaceD Dreamscape and Tuna Oddfellow and Medora Chevalier whose magical dances enchant us every Sunday. Inspired by the music of Junivers Stockholm, Torben Asp, Nnoiz Papp, Reis, Miles Eleventhaeur and so many others

The adventures of JaN PuLSfoRD, aTHeNa BLue, Madame la Pulse, and JaNa KYoMooN

Those familiar with JaN PuLSfoRD tend to describe her music in evocative terms. One fan says she provides “the musical notes my weary heart seeks to restore love's light”; another calls her “an explorer in the world of music.” In describing JaN’s live online performances, fans say, “Your music is like therapy. It washes away the hardships of the day as it nurtures the soul.” Still another, “Your musical massage each weekend is the perfect way to let all stress disappear and to feel at one with the universe.”

As much magician as musician, JaN uses technology the way a wizard uses her wand, bringing piano, synthesizers, sound loops, and other digital wonders to cast intricate spells. Sometimes her spells take the listener deeper into their mind, transports them to another world of the imagination, or compels them to hit the dance floor. Reflecting upon her musical journey, JaN said, “I live on the edge of technology, always looking for new ways of getting my music out there.”

Throughout her career, JaN has served others as a cunning musical druid, the silent partner of many notables: the Thompson Twins, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Darlene Love, from the pop of Steps to the jazz of Chico Freeman, and most famously, Cyndi Lauper, all talented vocalists and charismatic front men comfortable in the spotlight. And like King Arthur, they receive the credit and the accolades while their musical Merlin casts the spells behind the scenes. At the same time, her music is heard on TV stations all over the world, from MTV to BBC, Oprah Winfrey to Jerry Springer (!) and in independent movies and on line videos.

Given how the myth and modern fiction have credited the United Kingdom as the source of so many famous sorcerers and wizards, perhaps it’s not surprising that JaN was born and raised in Wales. Her parents supported her love of music at an early age: violin lessons at age 7; piano lessons shortly after. By the time she completed high school, she’d also learned the flute, cello, and clarinet. “Through high school I focused on the grades and exams required to get me into college with the goal of becoming a music teacher.”

Through perseverance, hard work, and dedication to her craft, JaN embarked on a successful career writing music for film and TV. Her early CDs of electronica are now collector’s items and her music won awards at the New York Film Festival. She also wrote the U.K.’s prestigious Song for Europe and played on countless sessions in the blossoming electronic London studio scene of the 80s. Eventually, JaN hit the road as the keyboard player for the Thompson Twins.

JaN reflects, “There is no such thing as overnight success. We make and discover our future, and are found by people who are looking for us in the same way we find people we are looking for. I have been jumping over hurdles all my life and when I fall, I dust myself off and start again. That is the trick—to get back up! I enjoy my feast or famine existence in the knowledge that I am true to my art, and still, after all these years, making a living with my music.”

Other established musicians took notice of JaN’s unique keyboard stylizations, and the demand for her talents grew. She moved to the United States and, in 1993, joined the tour band in support of Cyndi Lauper’s Hat Full of Stars.

During the tour, JaN shared with Cyndi her insight into the Arthurian Legend. They started writing new music, injecting their shared view of feminism and sisterhood as a creative power and exploring the various betrayals of that power in modern society. The result was Sisters of Avalon, Lauper’s sixth studio album. JaN not only provided keyboards and loops, but recorded, engineered, and mixed the final product (and afterward served as musical tour director on the road). A Christmas album followed, and their final co-creations were released as part of Lauper’s 2002’s Shine. Their partnership spawned twenty co-written songs between 1993 and 2001, and is arguably Lauper’s most artistic and critically acclaimed work.

At the same time, the internet sprang into the public domain, and JaN started her own Independent CD record label, Collecting Dust Recordings, to release music recorded by her production company under her alter ego “Madame la Pulse.” At English Valley Music Studio in the woods of Tennessee, JaN recorded, engineered, and released efforts for a host of talented musicians, including the late David Schnaufer, Kat Dyson, Felicia Collins, Sir Jam and Nigel Pulsford, her brother and lead guitarist from the rock band Bush. Most of the original ideas for Sisters of Avalon were recorded in this studio.

“I was seeing the potential the internet held for independent artist/musicians,” JaN recalled. “Back then, the internet was still an untapped adventure. On the other hand, I was incredibly naïve. I really believed the music business was about music and soon found the hard way that it's about business—on every level. I got chased around by CEOs who didn't have a clue about music or technology but knew that what I was doing was part of the future. Negotiations to buy the company got silly and I walked away. Later, Collecting Dust collided with the mp3 revolution and music quickly became devalued. No one wanted to admit that filesharing was stealing a living from many creatives—it really hurt the small indie companies and songwriters.”

In 2006, JaN first encountered the medium where her music has been discovered more recently and heard by a new group of fans—Second Life (SL), the virtual world in which JaN makes regular and highly attended appearances to perform using her avatar alter ego JaNa KYoMooN. “My friend the ambient musician Tony Gerber had discovered SL and, as the avatar/musician Cypress Rosewood, was having the time of his virtual life. I followed him in.”

JaN recalls her first musical adventure in a virtual environment. “I was part of the Peace Park Trio in 2006-7 playing at the Music ALL Music Peace Park, a sanctuary I built as a place of inner and global peace through music and the arts. I remember the exhilaration of really doing something new and special. The mixture of electronica with dulcimer and Native American Flute was extremely successful.”

In the summer of 2008, JaN began performing in SL as a solo artist. “It was quite a daunting prospect for someone whose whole musical life has been spent at the back of the stage or on the other side of the glass. At first I was performing hard-hitting electronica music from my aTHeNa BLue project, but the more down tempo, meditative ambient music was getting the biggest reaction. When I realized the positive aspect of performing this kind of music, I decided to dedicate most of my performances in SL to this end.”

Now back in the U.K., JaN performs online two to four times a week, while a dedicated radio channel (Radio JaNa) streams her music 24/7, growing her followers and a new set of collaborators only possible through the modern technologies of cyberspace. “Each day is like being on the Star Ship Enterprise, hailing all frequencies as I converse and write music with my creative collaborators in Greece, New York, Chicago, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Italy, L.A., London and Nashville. Where I have my address is of no consequence.”

And her performances in virtual worlds are indeed “live.” JaN explains, “I prepare sequences in Logic and have everything running live. With computer running sequences and me playing over them, there’s a feeling that anything could happen. There is a certain energy from playing music live that you can’t communicate from lip syncing with ready-made mixes.”

JaN PuLSfoRD, aTHeNa BLue, JaNa KYoMooN—the musical magician vanishes, changes, conjures new personas, creates new moods, evokes new aural landscapes. On SL, JaN can finally create the proper otherworldly venue to accompany her musical spells. Where congregating avatars have the floor drop out from under them (no worries; avatars float), where colors swirl and pulse to the beat, where the paintings move across the wall. Not to mention the big purple disco ball. Even magicians have to accessorize!

aMBieNT ReFLeCTioNS oF JaNa KYoMooN is her third collection of Second Life compositions to be released commercially, and JaN’s first release through the D-Pulse Ovrtone label. About D-Pulse, JaN enthused, “I worked with DPulse on a few remixes and live shows with my aTHeNa BLue project. I have always admired their commitment to electronic music and I am so delighted to have them involved!” Ambient Reflection of JaNa KYoMooN is available in CD or download at all major online music sites.

As the title suggests, JaNa is casting her calming spells, weaving otherworldly tones of blues and jazz to draw you inward and help you escape to happier places. If this is the first time you’ve surrendered yourself to the musical magician’s spell, you’ll be pleased to know she has a huge “spellbook” in her back catalog—from dance electronica to soothing lullabies and everything in between.

Stage names, avatars, handles and pen names, identity and choice - my life as an avatar

Before the internet went into the public domain in 1993 those of us battling with phone cups, Tandys and Ataris communicated on line using numbers as our 'handle'. Ah the 80s! Life on line seemed so cosy and private.

Moving into the 90s AOL, Compuserve, e-world etc. frowned on using your real name - in fact the only time i ever saw a hint of conformity was in academia. Most of us had a lot of fun making up names and designing or downloading gifs for our avatars and icons - no photos, no reality - what lay on the other side of the screen remained a mystery.

I liked that.

As a composer/producer/songwriter/musician i have always worked 'behind' the scenes, behind the artist, behind the glass, behind the monitor. There were a lot of us who were very happy being faceless before we were dragged into this world of digital instantaneous photo galleries and video.

And many stars, whilst not looking for anonymity, used 'stage names'. Who had heard of Declan MacManus, Reginald Dwight, Gordon Sumner, Adam Copeland or more recently Stefani Germanotta?

Psychologically I would think it separates them from their on stage persona or sometimes they choose an easier name to remember - I mean Jay-Z is a lot easier than Shawn Corey Carter

So because i enjoy making a wide variety of music it made a lot of sense for me to have a different image to front the different styles of music i was releasing myself - like having a different band name for different projects. Today it would be called 'branding'

Madame la Pulse was my first in the 90s - a dancing avatar with a top hat and cane - the madame of the house of groove! LOL

in 2003 i embarked on an electronica project called aTHeNa BLue - again an avatar was used - the artist Paul Harmon kindly let me use one of his paintings as the image that defined aTHeNa BLue

Since 2006 i have been experimenting with music and artistic creative collaboration in virtual worlds using the avatar JaNa KYoMooN playing ambient reflective music and taking full advantage of having a 3D avatar that amazingly walks, talks and performs - we've come a long way baby from that animated gif!

and behind all of these on line identities is JaN PuLSFoRD - i'm so easy to find, i'm not hiding from anyone - it's just a creative thing i do out of choice!

Facebook suspended the JaNa KYoMooN account with no warning and thousands of others in a weekend known as the virtual rapture - and last weekend the same thing happened with Google Plus. There are many profiles missing - we had such high hopes after the mess that is Facebook but the corporate mindset that has taken over the web has other ideas. Our accounts are deemed as fake and unless we use our real life name and photograph we are suspended.

Aside from all the other issues it raises ( like identity theft, corporations keeping tabs on you etc.) it is really about choice - our choice as citizens of the internet to be who we want to be.

I would love to know what Tim Berners-Lee thinks about all of this . .

tech-speak mumbo jumbo

One more day of tests and then I shall try broadcasting again
I feel we are in a society where the customer has become the problem and so corporations are trying to fix the customer not get to the cause of the real problem.
If they can't deliver the goods as promised, how do they get away with selling them?
Because they can and too few people complain!
They bamboozle the customer with tech-speak mumbo jumbo, confusing the user so much that they feel inadequate and foolish — it's just easier to put up with the poor service.
Meanwhile the monthly direct debit keeps spitting money into the corporation's account.
Tech support is SO time consuming and we the customer do not get paid whilst
we work for free, helping the company detect problems that shouldn't exist.
Too often we walk away because we don't have the time to deal with it …
and isn't that just what they want to happen?

Over the years I have worked BeHiND many artists.

We are the ones at the back of the stage, on the other side of the glass in the recording studios, a foot note on album sleeves.

Usually by choice, we enjoy this roller coaster life in music being fairly anonymous to most. So when I have done projects of my own I have usually adopted a name - from Madame la Pulse to aTHeNa BLue and more recently JaNa KYoMooN - all different projects in their own right with distinctive styles.

To me it's no different than working behind "Cyndi Lauper" or "Thompson Twins", "Bush" or any other brand name.

Add the on line possibilities of avatars and virtual worlds into the mix and it becomes a more powerful prospect than years ago. We live in a brave new world.

Behind the Monitor at Ditto (Part 2)

Someone in the audience asked about relationships formed on line - another questioned my suggestion of the benefits of virtual worlds for disabled people.

Yesterday both of these topics came to the forefront when a person who was both a dear friend and terminally ill died. You may have seen the blog on http://janakyomoon.com and on the JaNa KYoMooN facebook page.

She had been using Second Life in a really positive way and was a true inspiration to all who knew her. I post what she wrote for the Ditto presentation here . . Her avatar was Brywnwynn Llewellyn and she used her eyes to work the software whilst being confined to a bed in a research hospital. There was a remarkable woman behind the avatar . . . A doctor, researcher and inspiration to all who came into contact with her . . and of course a Welsh woman whose attempts to try and get us to speak Welsh were legendary! Oct 21st Behind the Monitor at Ditto ( Part One)

Last Thursday I presented Behind the Monitor live in London
Those of you in Second Life may remember the series with the same name — a collection of interviews I did in 2009 trying to explore the musicians behind the avatars who perform in virtual worlds.
So this time I went live and explored myself (LOL) with the help of Escape Unplugged and Mal Burns
It was a really interesting experience -
sharing my love of music and technology with a real life crowd as part of the Ditto Campfire
and explaining how i arrived at performing in the virtual world of Second Life using the avatar JaNa KYoMooN.
Of course, once I saw all the macs and cameras that were available I just had to make it a technological feast -
so we broadcast the event to Ustream
which streamed it
into Second Life
and into Facebook using the StreamJam app.
We were watching ourselves on screen in another (virtual) world
whilst being watched by the avatars in the virtual world of Second Life
in a virtual build of the Ditto Office we were streaming from - -
wowow - -
Listening to three hours worth of music which was programmed and uploaded to a cloud server then streamed to radio JaNa and into SL and itunes
The reception included a live paintings in light art show using particles with Interfaced Dreamscape streaming live from Singapore
and the after show party was courtesy of Tuna Oddfellow streaming mind blowing live art and graphic from the Research Center in Boston

"Sisters of Avalon" and the virtual "Sisters of the KYoMooN"

Sandy Demina asked me to explain the meaning of the song so here goes . . .

"Sisters of Avalon" was a song written with Cyndi Lauper who performs it in concert and on the album "Sisters of Avalon"
For my virtual on line performances I perform it instrumentally as Sisters of the KyoMooN

It is a song about sisterhood -
How when a woman cries
we can all feel her pain
How we are all connected
globally

In 1994 Cyndi and I were on tour writing songs and talking about various books we were reading
I was fascinated with The White Goddess by Robert Graves and the 21 lessons of Merlyn and Cyndi was reading Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley

The power of women was a very evident subject in both books, steeped in rich mythology, legends and allegories.

We took the symbolism of the Sisters of Avalon to mean womankind
For us it was all about the symbolism not the historical accuracy

The chant in this song is very powerful
It is the sound of empowerment
a sound of voices singing all over the world
A mystical thread that sews us together
into a quilt of many colours
We are all sisters dancing . . .

Cyndi and I were also inspired by a news report played over and over on CNN about a 10 year old girl in Egypt being circumcised
Women all over the world felt her pain, heard her screams and helplessly shuddered in empathy.

We sing and play this song for her and all women who have no voice
and celebrate the ones who do

Sisters of Avalon

Felt someone calling me in the howling of the wind.
I heard the reflection of a sound echoing through my skin
and a distant drum rumbling under ground
gently guides me on
through my wild heart
whispering to me
the Sisters Of Avalon

She is awakening in dark swells and mystery.

They brought her in in a new white dress

Now all that's left are the ghostly steps from a distant corridor.

Footnote
In the mists and legends of time the Sisters were variously portrayed as -
the ones who received Arthur onto the island
a group of druid priestesses who fought the Romans
who hung red lanterns outside their homes to show they were the powerful ones
wore black and were revered in the matriarchal society of the early Celts
and were vilified by the church as it tried to take control of the pagan religions.

Over the years their powers were driven underground but it still rumbles through the caverns of the earth.
I believe women, if they listen, can still feel it as they walk together.

The last six months have been a very creative time with the online concerts and radio shows going from strength to strength. Many have asked about the new album so i am happy to let you know it is being mixed next month and will be available for digital download and on CD format in April.

Merlyn's Magical Music and Autism

During the mid 1990's, I had the privilege to work with
special needs preschoolers in a public school setting. Many of them
had various forms of autism. Some were quite severe and non-verbal,
whilst others were high functioning. Some had various sensory issues
that made even the simplest of tasks quite difficult to complete.
Several of the children had auditory sensitivities so severe it made
learning a struggle. Often, much of my time was spent dealing with
'melt-downs' and very little teaching, unfortunately.
Around this time, I recall reading an article about autism
and how classical music was often used to help soothe people
afflicted with the condition. I wondered if your cd Merlyn's Magical
Music might elicit similar responses in the autistic children I was
working with at the time, as I did not own any classical music.
I brought the cd into the classroom and was quite pleased at
the response from the children. I began by playing it in the
background during our table time activities where focus and attention
to task were especially important. The teacher and I found that not
only were the autistic children attending to the task better, but ALL
of the children seemed to benefit from the soothing environment we
created by having the music on in the background. Even the children
with ADD/ADHD were able to maintain their attention to task for
longer periods of time before needing redirected.
The autistic children who had such extreme sensitivities to
sound didn't appear to be affected negatively whatsoever. In fact,
quite the opposite. They noticed the music, and several even 'danced'
to the gentle rhythms, rocking their bodies side to side or forward
and back to the beat. When the music was on, they were more engaged
with their peers and more aware of their environment/surroundings.
One little boy even went and laid down next to the speaker on the cd
player!
When our group of 13 children got a bit too rowdy, we'd pop
in the cd and dim the lights and were grateful for the calming effect
the music had on them.
I found the cd to be helpful as well with a child I worked
with who had spastic cerebral palsy. Part of her day consisted of
having to have her arms and legs and trunk muscles stretched. I found
that when I stretched her muscles whilst playing Merlyn's Magical
Music, she relaxed easier and didn't resist the stretching as much.
Merlyn's Magical Music worked so well in creating an
inviting, soothing and safe environment for our classroom that it
became part of our daily routine to have it programmed to repeat.
Having since had my own child with various special needs
including autism and cerebral palsy, I have found the cd to be
beneficial in helping my daughter fall asleep at night. She also
allows me to do her stretching exercises with minimal complaints when
Merlyn's Magical Music Volume 2 is playing (she's partial to Olivia's
Kittens). I often have her cranial sacral therapist play the cd
during her weekly CST session so that she is able to fully relax for
the hour.
Merlyn's Magical Music was even played in the Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit where my daughter spent her first month of life.
I requested the nurses play it for her so she wouldn't be as
irritated by the ventilator tubes and IV lines she had in place,
helping to sustain her life. When I was able to bring my daughter
home, the nurses asked if they could keep the cd there in the unit,
as even they found it to be quite soothing!
Thank you again, for creating and sharing such healing music
- I will always be grateful for the many ways it has impacted my
life, professionally, personally and spiritually. I also thank you
as well on behalf of the many special needs children out there who
have achieved so many goals, in part, because of the healing effect
of your music.

Darlene Love's last album "It's Christmas of Course" included the song "Night of Peace" written by Jan Pulsford and Seth Glassman, who is now Darlene's Musical Director and Bass Player. Produced by Kevin Killen the song has become a firm seasonal favourite. Congratulations and good luck to the legendary Darlene Love!

"The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation Announces Nominees for 2010 Induction New York (September 23, 2009)— The nominations for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum were announced today. The twelve nominees are: ABBA, Darlene Love, Donna Summer, Genesis, Jimmy Cliff,
KISS, Laura Nyro, LL Cool J, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Chantels, The
Hollies, and The Stooges. Ballots will be sent to more than 500 voters,
who will select artists to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame at the 25th Annual Induction Ceremony on March 15, 2010 at the
Waldorf Astoria in New York City.
To be eligible for nomination into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, an
act must have released its first single or album at least 25 years prior
to the year of nomination. This year’s nominees had to release their
first single no later than 1984.
DARLENE LOVE
Her powerful gospel sound was developed singing in her father’s church
in East L.A. At 16, Darlene sang at a wedding where two of the
bridesmaids asked her to join their vocal group, The Blossoms. They
quickly established a major presence in the L.A. session scene doing
backgrounds for artists such as Sam Cooke. Darlene caught the attention
of young genius record producer Phil Spector and he made her one of the
cornerstones of his “Wall of Sound” under various names (The Crystals,
Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans, and of course, Darlene Love). She sang
lead on a string of hits, earning an important place on the landscape of
60’s rock & roll. She continues to have a prolific singing career,
having starred on Broadway, and in recent years has returned to her
gospel roots. "

Green Hills Apple Store Missing 8 Gig RAM Case Closed

Those of you following my twitter micro blog may be familiar with the missing RAM issue of the last 18 months Like most musicians I am too busy to deal with a lot of stuff and corporations know that by making it so time consuming and difficult to get a problem resolved - knowing we will eventually let it slide.

Basically I took in a G5 for repair and it came back minus 8 GIG of RAM, The Genius Bar of course denied all knowledge and claimed they gave it to me back. Of course they didn't and despite several visits to the store, emails to Apple I had to get on with my work rather than be held back by missing RAM ( remember i am self employed with no assistant)

Anyway I finally talked to someone (again) at apple about it last week and here is a copy of the report I filed

It would have been nice to think that Apple would have adhered to the old adage that "the customer is always right" and offered to replace the 8 GIG but i begrudgingly had to admit that the case is now closed.
As a customer and Mac evangelist since the 80s I find it a hard pill to swallow that Mac is now more of a corporate entity with the ensuing corporate ethics than the opposition. Shame!.

To all mac users - advance with caution! Especially when taking a computer in for repair at one of the genius bars - there are some light fingered geniuses about!

JAN PULSFORD - Composer, songwriter, virtual artist and explorer in the electronic world of music technology

Jan Pulsford's life has been jam packed with musical adventures that started in London amidst the electronic and hair revolution of the 80s. She crafted her keyboard playing, programming and composing skills writing jingles, library music and scores for independent films and even wrote the UK entry for the prestigious Song for Europe in 1983. After countless sessions, TV and gigs with a myriad of artists ranging from the Buggles to Bananarama, Jan joined the Thompson Twins and toured the world as their keyboard player.
Her fascination with music technology and computers started in the days of the Oberheim System. She worked through C-lab's Notator for Atari to Logic Audio and all things Apple Mac. This pioneering spirit brought Jan to the USA where she built her recording studio, English Valley Music, in the woods of Tennessee and worked with soon to be award-winning artists/writers like Craig Wiseman, Giles Reeves and Byron House.
After the birth of her son Merlyn in 1990 she formed the production company Madame la Pulse Productions and developed many independent artists including Felicia Collins who is now the guitarist for Late Night with David Letterman and Kat Dyson and Sir Jam who both became members of Prince's musical entourage.
Jan also formed one of the first online labels during the frenzied Internet revolution of the 90s. Collecting Dust Recordings released CDs by artists Nigel Pulsford, guitar player with multi platinum rock band Bush and Grammy nominated Dulcimer legend David Schnaufer.
Cyndi Lauper heard her music and invited Jan to New York where from 1993-2001 she worked as Cyndi's co-writer, producer and touring musical director. Their partnership spawned some of Lauper's most artistic and critically acclaimed work. Over twenty co-written songs were released on the albums "12 Deadly Cyns" ~ "Sisters of Avalon" ~ "Merry Xmas" and "Shine"
Always a lover of the rhythms of dance Jan wrote Cyndi's club hits "Come on Home", "You Don't Know" "Higher Plane" and "Cleo and Joe" which led to her working with Grammy nominated DJ Julian Marsh on many of his Pride CDs with Happy Charles and Jajucha and more recently UK artist Alan Connor and Evan Cowden.
Jan's songs have also been performed by artists as diverse as Ani da Franco, Steps, Darlene Love, Chico Freeman, Bruce Wooley, the Leaders, Dr. Elmo, Sweet Dreams, Zoe Girl, Jeff Oster, Hazell Dean, Julian Marsh and Townes Van Zandt.
She has had over twenty albums of production music for film and TV released. You name a TV program and Jan's music has probably been used on it - from Oprah to Jerry Springer, MTV to the BBC. Her music has won awards at the New York Film Festival and she has worked with major library music companies like Atmosphere Music UK and FirstCom Music in Dallas.
Film scores include "Unhook the Stars", "Intimacy" and Audrey Tatou's "At the End" which she wrote with Jazz great Chico Freeman. They continue mixing jazz with electronica and triphop on such projects as "Zolace", "Guataca" and "aTHeNa BLue" the latter being best known for the ReQuieM 4 eLViS + JeSuS, which has been performed around a thousand times both on line and live at the City Skies Electronica festival in Atlanta and the Buzz + Click Festival for WRVU. Acid Planet recently ran a remix competition and it is being featured in an upcoming TV documentary about music for peace.
At the turn of the century Jan became a beta tester for Logic Audio's Rocket Network becoming part of a global network of pioneers of on line collaboration. She now expands that in the 3D virtual world of Second Life where she performs as a solo virtual artist mixing electronica with ambient improvisations and rhythmic reflections in what has been described as "a gallery of soundscapes and audio paintings." Using the avatar JaNa KYoMooN she broadcasts live music five times a week to an international audience of thousands that includes hospitals and hospices. She recently won an SL Anthology Music award, being voted the Best New Age Artist.

Dear Friends

Later today we celebrate the spring equinox, which makes it seem a perfect time to take stock of the events in the creative side of my life in 2007. So read on dear reader . . . It’s been an exciting time

DARLENE LOVE recorded "A Night of Peace" for her Xmas album produced by Kevin Killen. That song was actually written on Xmas day some years ago with Seth Glassman. Seth and I met when I was writing and recording with Cyndi Lauper. Mostly Seth sends me lyrics and I write the music then send the song back and Seth produces them. We have a decent sized catalogue now and have started pitching the songs around.

Lots happening too with my other writing partner CHICO FREEMAN. We have been working together since the beta testing days of the Rocket Network. Mostly Chico sends me music and I write the lyrics. Having said that we both wrote the music for the title cut of the just released Leader's album "Spirit's alike" and another track "Alas poor John" . . . Jazz at its finest as played by Chico along with Cecil McBee, Bobby Watson, Fred and Eddie Henderson.
Our main project this year is completing "The Second American song book" a collection of “new” jazz standards. Some beautiful tunes and songs here! We are always looking for that perfect voice to sing it . . . Our publishing company Icoja Music just licensed music for the film "I hate my job"

I have also started writing with BETSY ULMER, one of Craig Wiseman's protégés who is signed to Big Loud Shirt in Nashville. She is destined for great things. Her mentor is probably one of the most successful songwriters in the history of country music. I met him donkeys years ago when I had just come to TN and he was drumming and "getting going" We even wrote a couple of songs together before he took off into the stratosphere . . . don't you love success stories when they are well deserved! "Live like you were dying"

One of the songs Betsy and I have written will be on the JAJUCHA album that will be recorded this summer. This is a project that Julian Marsh, Charles Green and myself unwittingly started when we recorded a couple of songs for a remix compilation album for Klone Records in the UK. Julian and I were introduced when I started working with Charles back in his Happy Charles days and was a very successful hi NRG DJ. We ended up recording four tracks for his Centaur Pride Compilations. I say was because he no longer does live DJ-ing but just remixes and studio work. . Everyone from Kristine W to Norma Lewis. The JaJuCha album is going to be a very exciting project with lots of guest artists. Watch this space and work out how the name JaJuCha came about . . . haha!

Talking of guest artists. . I have recently got to know a true living legend. The one and only MELANIE. What a treat to meet an artist who lives and breathes music with principles! Her son Beau is just as talented as can be and I have so enjoyed spending time with them between their busy touring schedule and look forward to making music with them both very soon

5250 MUSIC is close to completion. Just seems to have been thwarted by technology gone bad and taken a lot of work! This is a collection of music for film and TV with Dustin Michael of the Experimental Division who I met when I was working with the Project (the ambitious CD that had so much potential but like so many fell apart before it had begun) This is an exciting collection of music and I am looking forward to releasing it this summer

Sadly drummer/musician IAN WALLACE lost his battle with cancer on Feb 22nd. I was lucky to have worked with him whilst he lived in Nashville and Merlyn was lucky enough to have had him as a drum teacher until he moved back to LA. Thanks Ian. R.I.P.

JEFF OSTER has just finished mixing his CD True with two co-written cuts and club remixes in the works. Produced and engineered by Will Ackerman and Bryan Carrigan and now Bruce Sweiden!! A very nice mixture of melodic ambient chill.

TONY GERBER was one of the first people I met when I first arrived in TN. Tony is one of the gurus of ambient electronica with his band Spacecraft and his record label Space for Music. He has performed at Planetariums and festivals around the world. I will never forget when he introduced me to the Internet in the early 90s and disappeared for weeks. . Maybe months into deepest cyber space. Our lives have crossed over the years both in Real life and in Cyber Space and last year he introduced me to Second Life where he resides as CYPRESS ROSEWOOD.

As my life exists mainly in my head the virtual world of second life makes perfect sense to me. So I have jumped in feet first and built the music ALL music Peace Park with streaming radio, live shows, market, shops, galleries and all the trimmings LOL. . and a stage. We start “live” performances in April. WATCH THIS SPACE! Oh yes and my avatar is Jana Kyomoon . . . It's a long way from my Tandy and phone cups!

Over the years I seem to have unwittingly recorded quite a bit of "Holiday" music - from BBC2's Christmas themes to Dr Elmo's "Santa ain't comin" (of Grandma got run over by a reindeer fame) to Cyndi Lauper's CD "Merry Xmas . . have a nice life" to my own "Music for Winter Festivals" to Happy Charles "The Christmas Dream" and so on, and on . . .

In the heady days of the internet revolution my reggaefied version of "Good King Wenceslas" was a number one on mp3.com! and whilst on tour in Japan I heard various self penned Xmas ditties blaring though the airwaves . . . but my biggest thrill was a reviewer who said my Xmas music was the strangest thing he'd heard since David Bowie and Bing Crosby recorded the Little Drummer Boy . . . Praise indeed!

Tony Gerber was one of the first people Jan met when she came to visit Nashville. Their paths have crossed many times since then both musically and at the Indian Restaurant.
Tony is one of the gurus of ambient electronica with his band Spacecraft and his record label Space for Music. He has performed at Planetariums and festivals around the world.

Briefly
Things got put into perspective when David Schnaufer got gravely ill and passed away in the hospice August 23rd
most of you know i worked with him on the sisters of avalon with Cyndi Lauper and again on the Merry Xmas have a nice life CD and also recorded and produced his Delcimore CD along with many other tracks for misc projects including a whole album of piano and dulcimer music which never got mixed.Sadly the album got wiped in a series of mishaps with hard drives . . but I still believe one day i will find it!!! Anyway David will never be forgotten.

Chico Freeman and I wrote a couple of tunes for a jazz album called "the leaders" which sounds really good. Jazz at its finest as played by Cecil McBee, Bobby Watson and Eddie Henderson. Scheduled for release in March.
We have finally finished writing for the triphop project in Greece and have a few tracks on hold for a major film. (Fingers crossed)

Jeff Oster and I swapped files on line ready for his new recording with Will Ackerman and Bryan Carrigan. A very nice mixture of melodic ambient chill.

Dustin Michael and I have been putting together 5250 Music. A collection of 50 cutting edge music shorts, tailor made for film and TV music supervisors. Dustin is one of the young "movers and shakers" in Nashville. We worked together some years back on "The Project"

Seth Glassman and I continue our weekly on line writing sessions. We have been pitching our ever increasing catalogue and have finished writing songs for the Darlene Love album

The 3kstatic gigs in Florida with George Clinton's Parliament got cancelled. But it's coming up for the Buzz and Click Festival in November so hoping to do something with them then. One of my aTHeNa BLue tracks "A man's world" is on their CD "Songs for Choice"

Charles Green went off with CDs in hand to do the Southern Women's shows . .

and in my "spare time" I posted various pieces of doodling on my space and got very inspired by the amazing amount of talent there is out there

Since 2000 I have worked almost exclusively on line through a series of programs from Logic's Rocket to AIM, ichat, FTP, dot mac etc. These days it is possible to co-write, send files, produce sessions with isight etc.etc. in fact I would say it is fast becoming the norm.

All people on my "buddy list" are professionals - Idle chat isn't the name of the game (-: although occasional deep and meaningful discussions about the soul of the universe do help with song-writing . . (-:!

Recently i was stalked on the internet by someone who, because of her obsession with a male co-writing friend of mine, tricked me into a long drawn out series of "interviews" under the guise of writing a book. As time went on i realized it was turning into an unhealthy obsession, Every time i went on line a bubble would appear on my desktop It was as if she thought I was available 24/7 to answer any technical question or just to chat about "nothing". I would try my best to answer the flood of increasingly bizarre messages and if i didn't there would be indignant emails. Eventually i just had to ignore her which as i found out is the worst thing you can do to a self absorbed obsessive as, when her computer crashed, she accused me of hacking into it because of MY "infatuation" with my co-writer . . !!!!

Anyway the outcome of this bizarre episode was that I realized how easy it is to let people know your every move on line . .
So I decided to post some tips to prevent this kind of situation happening to you!!!

If your email is a dot mac or AOL prefix anyone, who knows that email address, can find out when you are on line by using ichat or AIM

SOLUTION: Go to ichat or AIM Prefs/Accounts/Security
Select your desired Privacy Level which will determine who can see you are on line and who can send you messages

If you are on MY SPACE anyone can see when you are on line
SOLUTION; Go to Account Settings/Privacy Settings
Select your desired privacy settings and hide the on line now icon (if desired)

IF all else fails you can BLOCK a user on AIM/ichat and BOUNCE emails from that user in dotmac

Many of you will know that David Schnaufer has suffered from ill health throughtout his life. Unfortunately this has recently developed into a serious situation and David is now in the hospice in Nashville gravelly ill but surrounded by love and all the best wishes he has been sent.

There are many people working hard to document his enormous musical legacy.

Dear David Schnaufer Fans and Friends,

I wanted to give you all an update on David's condition, thank all of you for the great stories and prayers, and let you know of an incredible project that David recorded in February which is out now.

First and foremost, David is very weak but had some nice days this week. He chuckled over some of the tales being told and was very aware for much of the week. He is weak and resting most of the time, but I know he feels and appreciates your thoughts and prayers. I don't say that just to make you feel good. I truly believe he feels the love you are sending. The insights you've shared about your friendships have revealed to me that David came across just as he hoped-- a humble spirit with a deep caring for his students and for the dulcimer. I will pull these stories together (anybody that wants to remain anonymous, fear not) to share with you when the time is right. David is a tremendous inspiration for all ages and all musical abilities. We not only have his recordings but we've learned to play the dulcimer, which is his heartfelt mission.

Now for the new project... I was in Nashville in February while David recorded with Linda Ronstadt! For those of us who came of age in the 70s, Linda was the real deal. She came to Nashville because she wanted David to play on the new recording with Ann Savoy (who is from the Bayou Teche, I believe.) Linda wanted David to play on the tunes as well as interludes. I got my copy today and it is INCREDIBLE. The vocal harmonies and David's playing on the title cut and throughout the project are lovely. There are some lovely Cajun tunes and great folk songs with these two wonderful female voices. To me, David's instrumentals are the "stars" of the recording, but then I might be prejudiced.

The recording is "Adieu, False Love", Linda Ronstadt and Ann Savoy (Vanguard Records and produced by Steve Buckingham). I got mine from Amazon.com...

As you know from my communications, we are collecting as much of David's memorabilia, photos, concert footage as possible for David's archives at Vanderbilt. Any donations that are made in the future will be used to support his work there at the Blair School of Music. The music librarian at Vanderbilt has requested pictures documenting David's performances etc. I wonder if the dulcimer clubs/festivals he performed at over the years could piece together a retrospective for each of their festivals. This is a big project I know, but many of you may have already done this. It's is pretty easy to burn DVDs of old videotapes now. Any of your tapes or photos you want returned will be well cared for and sent back to you unharmed. If you can make copies for us to keep that would be great and a timesaver. I'm getting quite a few photos and other items sent to me here in the Austin City Limits. (Deb Porter, 12501 Tech Ridge Blvd #2138, Austin, Texas 78753) I can burn DVDs from videotapes before I send them on to Vanderbilt. Again, anything you want to be returned will be.

I will keep you posted on David's condition... Your greatest gift to David is to play your dulcimer. Let's all raise sweet dulcimer notes and a chorus for our friend, teacher, and beautiful spirit, David. He wants you to play, to share this instrument, to teach others (especially young people) with the same gentle hand that he used with all of us. Someone told me a story of coming into one of David's advanced workshops just to watch even though he was a beginner. He told David he just wanted to be there, but that he wasn't very good. David sat this novice right by him, carefully included him in the teaching process, and throughout the workshop peered over his glasses and in his southern way drawled, "You, okay?" Just kept him strumming right along... That's our David and he wants us to play and enjoy the dulcimer for all of our days here on earth.

It is 28 days since Hizbollah captured two Israeli soldiers, prompting a ground and air assault on Lebanon by the Israeli army. In that time, 932 people have been killed in Lebanon, with 75 missing, presumed dead.

29 Lebanese Army soldiers have been killed. 3,293 Lebanese have been wounded. 45 per cent of the casualties have been children. 913,000 Lebanese have been displaced (300,000 of whom are children).
94 Israelis have been killed and 1,867 wounded.

10,000 Israeli soldiers are currently fighting Hizbollah in southern Lebanon. 3,000 rockets have been fired at Israel by Hizbollah.
The average number of rockets fired daily by Hizbollah in the first week of the conflict was 90. Over the past five days, it has been 169.

Israel has flown 8,700 bombing sorties, destroying 146 bridges and 72 roads. Damage caused to Lebanon's infrastructure is estimated at $2bn.
Up to 30,000 tons of oil have spilled into the Mediterranean since an Israeli air strike on Jieh power station.

The international community (apart from Britain and the US) has called for an immediate ceasefire. As yet, the number of UN resolutions: 0

Last November I was asked to do a concert @ the 5spot 4 WRVU. This happened to coincide with the death toll of american servicemen in iraq reaching 2000. A milestone that affected me deeply.

My father used to say to me "Don't touch it you'll break it”. . how right he was!
Years later when I found the courage to switch on anything electrical I unwittingly took on music technology in more ways than one . . .
and so this week I have come out of another spate of crashed hard drives, monster power conditioners that didn't condition, computers that wouldn't boot and lots of time and money spent contemplating how my quest to write and record music, (and heaven forbid continue to make a living from it!), has become at the mercy of software, hardware and electric companies!!

Next Thursday Charles Green and I will be hosting a "benefit" @ Murphy's Loft for some of the tornado victims of April 7th.
I escaped from the wrath of mother nature into the cooler in Cracker Barrel in Gallatin whilst part of the community of Goshen Town, to which i had moved one week earlier, was razed to the ground.
One woman has been left paralyzed whilst saving her two young boys, their house along with the one next to it reduced to a concrete slab. Other houses nearby received such bad damage that they have to be demolished . . can you imagine watching the house you had built being torn down? Awful stuff. Turning every corner around this beautiful area of Sumner County the day after the tornado, just drew my breath away. One feels so helpless!
Music being the only thing i know how to do Charles Green and I decided to make the last night @ Murphy's Loft one for the tornado.(Yes after Thursday they are no longer having live music there . . another blog about the demise of live music coming up . . watch this space )
We hope we can raise enough money to bring some cheer to the people still reeling from the shock and some whose lives will never be the same.

Several years ago I recorded a beautiful album of music for the festive season with up and coming artist "Happy Charles" . . Who has since become Charles Green . . www.happycharles.com

This is by far the most lovely album of holiday music I have recorded . . I did a song with Elmo of "Grandma's got run over by a reindeer" fame, my own "Music for Winter festivals", an album of tunes for Atmosphere music, various dulcimer seasonal ditties and of course "Merry Xmas . . Have a nice life" with Cyndi Lauper . . . It was her last recording for Sony and as the title reflects she had had enough, reflected in her vocal performance and production. The songs were pretty and like everything I did with Cyndi had such great potential . . but that's another story and another life. We all dabble with things outside of our norm but somehow always seem to end up back in our comfort zone which is musically where she and I are today . .

Anyway I digress . . . back to the Christmas dream. Title song written by Julian Marsh www.julianmarsh.com and me .
Oh Julian erstwhile king of the remix.! How I loved his dance CDs . . but then I digress again

As with most albums there were the high dramas and so one of the songs couldn't make it to the final pressing because of legal threats over the co-writing. The mailout Xmas card which we OK'd with the US post office was a disaster . .Most of the CDs were either returned or arrived at their destination broken. I didn't care for the cover but Charles loved it. The accompanying single "Sitting on Santa's lap" was an almost homicidal disaster with the mastering engineer having a nervous breakdown in my studio followed by me nervously locking all doors and windows at 4 am . . . etc. etc. but it still remains one of the most beautiful albums I have recorded . .

So 4 years later and one of Charles song "Give your heart away" has found its way into a great local musical -www.wafflehousemusical.com I wish writer/director/producer Kain all the best with this! We went on Saturday night and the show has GREAT potential! Salutation to everyone involved!

Darlene Love heard "If I could" and "A night of peace" (hurriedly recorded as a substitute for the song we couldn't use and both written by yours truly and Seth Glassman - www.sethglassman.com) Last year Darlene hosted "A night of peace at the Apollo" . .I have video of her and Cissy Houston and Ben E King et al singing the aforementioned song which closed the show . .

. . and so this Thursday we are doing a rescheduled "Night of Peace" in Nashville at Murphy's Loft. Charles is performing songs from the CD and I will be performing instrumental music for the winter festivals . .

Well it would seem from the emails i'm getting that people are going to be reading this blog so i suppose i'd better start writing on a more regular basis . . .

At the moment i'm finishing "Oxygen and Love" . . a really beautiful collection of songs by Charles Green. I have been working with Charles for years . .we've done four songs with DJ Julian Marsh which were released on the Party Groove Label but now Charles has traded in the pumping four on the floor dancebeats for something a little more acoustic. It's a simple lineup . . piano some guitar, percussion, backing vocals, violin and of course Charles' beautiful voice.

i recently heard through the grapevine that many people were concerned that my site "janpulsford,com" had disappeared . . . let me assure you I have not . . although this oppressive heat has turned me into something of a summer hermit. Roll on the autumn i say!

Gig with Felicia Collins Friday 29th April NYC Ashford & Simpson's SUGAR BAR 254 W 72nd St. (btw Broadway & West End) New York City. Friday April 29th 10 pm. I'll be guesting as keyboard player with my dear friend Felicia Collins. We met a LONG time ago in another century in Ireland when we were rehearsing for a world tour with the British pop band Thompson Twins. Now Felicia is the guitar player for the Late Show with David Letterman as part of the CBS orchestra.
